There is little point in spending money on search engine optimisation unless it achieves results.

There is little point in spending money on search engine optimisation unless it achieves results.

This may seem like a statement of the blindingly obvious, but we have come across many instances where 'search engine optimisation' work has supposedly been completed on a web site, and the client is under the illusion that it has been, but, when we have examined the site, we have either found little evidence that this is the case or that the work is incomplete or poorly done.

The client, though, has already paid up in all innocence and good faith, because there has been no objective performance-related aspect to the agreement with the 'SEO' company.

At Search Engine Ranking Company, we know that you want SEO because you want quantifiable positive results for your web site.

At Search Engine Ranking Company, we are more than willing to undertake search engine optimisation work for you based on unambiguous performance measures, so you are assured of value for money...

But What Performance Measures?

The be all and end all of search engine optimisation is to generate additional traffic for your web site via search engine referrals resulting from high rankings for relevant keywords.

We are happy to discuss performance-related SEO contracts based on either additional traffic generated or on rankings for specified keywords.

- Additional Traffic Targets

In order to agree a contract for SEO work based on additional traffic performance targets we would need to:

  • Establish what the monthly traffic 'baseline' is for your web site, ideally measured in terms of unique visits, i.e. the level of traffic that could reasonably be expected per month if no SEO work is undertaken.

  • Agree the value of and, therefore, the fees payable for additional traffic, above this baseline.

Please note, we only charge ONCE for additional traffic even though good SEO is likely to result in this increase repeating itself each month way into the future!

Let's take a hypothetical example...

Company A approaches Search Engine Ranking Company with the objective of generating additional traffic to its web site. Through an analysis of the web site statistics it is agreed that the 'baseline' monthly traffic figure for Company A's web site is 1000 unique visits per month.

Company A has a good understanding of both the conversion rate from visitors to sales and the average net profit from each incremental sale. Given this understanding, Company A offers Search Engine Ranking Company £1 for each additional visitor above the agreed baseline figure of 1000.

Search Engine Ranking Company does its own analysis of the SEO work required on Company A's web site and the feasibility of significantly driving up traffic volumes. We conclude, in this case, that £1 per additional visitor is a reasonable offer.

It is agreed that traffic levels will be monitored for a period of 6 months following completion of the SEO work.

The deal is done...

We then undertake the required SEO work on Company A's web site with a consequent positive effect on search rankings, referrals and, therefore, web site visitor numbers. Again using hypothetical traffic numbers, lets look at the relationship between additional traffic generated through SEO and fees payable.

Total Web Site Visitors Additional Traffic Fees Payable - £

  End of month 1 1050 50 50

  End of month 2 1200 150 150

  End of month 3 1500 300 300

  End of month 4 1700 200 200

  End of month 5 1800 100 100

  End of month 6 1820 20 20

  Totals   820 820

In this case, £820 has been charged for a total increase in web site visits of 820, but, as noted above, the results of good practice SEO are likely to be enduring and the increase in visitor numbers sustained.

If it is, in this hypothetical example, 820 more visitors than the original baseline of 1000 will continue to visit Company A's web site EACH MONTH.

So, at the end of another 12 months, a grand total of 12110 more visits (including the 2270 additional visits in the first 6 months) will have been achieved than if no SEO work had been done, for a cost of £820 - a cost per additional visitor of under 7p and this cost will continue to fall as time goes on...

In this hypothetical case we may want to consider the relative costs of search engine optimisation and pay per click promotion - would Company A be able to get quality click throughs for under 7p?

And of course, if Company A were to rely on PPC, they would always be paying for visits that good SEO would eventually be delivering for effectively next to nothing!

The lesson?

A single investment in effective SEO brings lasting and ever more cost-effective returns!

What Is Needed?

In order for us to agree a performance-related agreement with you for SEO work, there need to be accurate monitoring statistics for your web site in order to establish the traffic baseline and to monitor incremental traffic over the agreed time period.

- Rankings Targets

This approach is a little more straightforward.

In order to agree a contract for SEO work based on search engine rankings targets we would need to:

  • Agree the keywords for which you want your site to rank highly

  • Agree the ranking target - top 10, for example

  • Agree the search engine for which high rankings are to be achieved - Google (pages from the UK) or Google (the web), for example

  • Agree the fee payable for achievement

Are ALL Fees Performance Related?

The great majority of project fees will be related to the achievement of agreed performance targets, but you will understand the need for us to charge a relatively small up-front, non-refundable fee. Unfortunately, there are some time wasters out there and people who want everything for nothing!

What Will Search Engine Ranking Company Do To Achieve Agreed Targets?

Good question.

There are often concerns that SEO companies will resort to unscrupulous methods to achieve agreed targets and to 'earn' their fees.

Unscrupulous methods may well deliver results in the short term, but at Search Engine Ranking Company, we are committed to using 'ethical', good practice SEO techniques that will deliver you sustainable high rankings.

So what will we do to achieve either increased web traffic or top search engine rankings for your web site?

Obviously, this will depend to an extent on the nature and content of each web site but a fairly standard approach would be to look at:

  • search engine recognition - awareness as opposed to rankings - of the site as it stands (and improve)

  • web page coding (and optimise)

  • existing web page content (and amend if necessary)

  • the need for adding additional optimised web content (and create if necessary)

  • link popularity (build reciprocal links if required to enhance site performance)

  • other possible techniques

Obviously, you will want to approve whatever actions we propose, but, equally obviously, the greater discretion you grant us, the greater the likelihood that you will achieve your SEO objectives - whether rankings or traffic related - and that we will earn our fees!
